CHILD RIGHTS

Children are the first call in our development agenda. Every child is special and is entitled to the rights and privileges accorded to him or her in the International treaties and in the Constitution of India. For Chetanalaya the children in our intervention areas are the promising answers for tomorrow. Chetanalaya’s interventions on child rights are basically built on a multi focal approach to address not just child labour but discrimination, exclusion and inadequate community conscientization through systematic transformation of attitudes and perceptions.

Chetanalaya Child Rights Programmes begins with the right to education. Chetanalaya rums 36 pre school education centers where 1005 children under the age of six are prepared for school education, 46 Non Formal Education Centers where 1069 Out-of- School Children are taken care of with the objective of putting them back to school in the nearest academic year, 43 Remedial Education Centers where 1041 school going children are given special coaching on various subjects that helps the slow-learners, children with learning disabilities, inadequate adjustment, etc to keep pace of the regular school system and 3 Night Schools for Working Children and 5 crèches for the children of the working mothers

Dakhila Abhiyan (School Admission Campaign) and Admission Facilitation Centers are another innovative intervention of Chetanalaya that brings thousands of potential child laborers and drop outs to the formal schooling system. Every year during the school admission season, Chetanalaya organizes colourful and events-rich campaigns in the slums and other settlements to motivate parents and children to school. To help uneducated or illiterate parents to fill in the forms, admission facilitation centers are opened in the vicinity of the schools.

Right to Participation is an important child right that is often overlooked, because children are taken for granted. Chetanalaya organizes Children’s parliaments in the Small Communities and gets their views counted. The grass roots level workers as well as the senior programme teams in Chetanalaya are specially trained in facilitating Child Rights events and get their views counted in the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the development projects. The opportunities to express their concerns openly and critically evaluate the factors that affect their daily life makes these children active and contributing citizens of a modern democratic super power.

Creation of a community that respects child rights is very important. Chetanalaya organizes Child Rights Melas- mega events that help the community to put children at the centre of every intervention. The Child Rights Melas are noted for the participation of dignitaries.

Police- NGO- Children Meets are another series of interventions that Chetanalaya organizes as a public platform for the children to air their concerns without fear to the guards of the law- in the informal atmosphere of our office but with the formal presence of the responsible officers.

Parents Meetings are also conducted regularly to ensure that the educational and other rights of their children are respected and promoted.
